Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - weapon - 09-24-2009 She turns 65 this dec. Finally available for medicare. But she needs some sort of suplimental insurance. I have no clue what is best. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - AlphaDog - 09-24-2009 It would help to know where she lives, because there are often local health insurers who offer supplemental coverage that's very competitive. You might check with her current doctor to find out what other Medicare eligible patients use. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - MacDoxy - 09-24-2009 aarp Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - weapon - 09-24-2009 oregon. I am in my 30's and have no idea about this stuff. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - OWC Jamie - 09-24-2009 I'min Ma (and under 60) but you need a state specific guideline like this :http://www.ehealthlink.com/Senior/Default.aspx with a list of providers and options. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - weapon - 09-24-2009 I found a non profit Senior Health Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) that can hopefully help my mom. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - riley5108 - 09-24-2009 Weapon: I suggest you go to the Medicare site http://www.medicare.gov/Default.asp and click on (Learn More About Plans In Your Area). Now there are two supplement plans that come to mind 1) Medicare part D to help cover medications 2) Medigap insurance to help cover things that Medicare does not totally cover of which there are many. Like AlphaDog it would help to know what state she lives in. It's a good thing you're starting now for it will take some research to decide which plan will be best for her. Make sure she knows all her medications both drug name and the pharmaceutical name for generics are always less expensive and many plans (part D) only cover generics. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - rgG - 09-24-2009 My mom has the supplemental insurance through AARP and has been happy with it. I think it is offered all over the country. Be aware that all the plans are the same, they go by letters, only the prices are different. The government sets up the supplemental plans so that they are all standard so, once you select a plan by the letter code, you are just shopping for price. Don't forget to check into the prescription drug plan, which is a separate coverage. I had to help my parents too, so good luck and read each plan carefully, some are very similar. Check out this site: http://www.medicare.gov/medigap/Default.asp Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - cbelt3 - 09-24-2009 Also what CITY she lives in may vary as well. Also if she has any insurance options available through retirement from work, etc. often the best Medicare supplemental plans are for retirees from a specific workplace. My wife's uncle retired from a union job (UFCW) over 30 years ago, and his supplemental through the union with Kaiser is keeping him alive through years of cancer care, etc. He's very happy with it. Re: Suplemental insurance? Need help for my mom. - AllGold - 09-24-2009 Like rgG said, medicare supplement plans from different companies are required by law to be the same. So it's just a matter of shopping for the best price. |
