Battery on MBP done for?? - lipskidder - 09-30-2009

Health Information:
Cycle count: 427
Condition: Poor

Should it be poor? How much longer do I have, doc? Batteries aren't covered by Applecare are they?

The battery is considered a "consumable" product so it is not covered under Applecare. However, Apple determined the one in my MBP was bad from the start and gave me a replacement after a year or so of use. Might be worth a look.

We had a similar situation. I was told that cycle count would lead to a battery in poor condition. It was not a problem, but the expected situation. We had to replace the battery. I don't think Apple Care will do anything for you.

That's a lot of cycles. Sounds like it's time for a replacement.

So I am reading the reviews from the Apple site for their battery. People for the most part do not like theirs are are going third party. Is that the consensus here as well?

Are these from OWC new or used?

I'd not call them new with the "90%" or better copy. But they are probably near new as they hold that much charge. For 60 bucks less than new, seems like a good deal for an already in-service machine.

What are considered "third-party" batteries? Where can I find those?

Third-party batts are any that Apple does not make. You can often find them on Amazon, mac reseller sites, etc. For instance, OWC has a line of high-capacity batteries for G3 and G4 laptops, but unfortunately not for MBs and MBPs. (I'm guessing due to patent regulations.) Google "macbook pro battery" and you should see a selection of 3rd party batts. Barring the absence of the OWC batt here, I'd be inclined to buy the Apple battery on this one.
