formatting drive- is this how? - MacDoxy - 10-13-2009

1) Launch "Disk Utility"
2) Select the drive
3) Select the "erase" button
Follow the 4-step instructions that appear.
The format you want is "Mac OS extended (journaled)."

this is for a portable hard drive
not 4 booting

it came with a lot of windows junk on it
(WD passport essential 250 gb)
i would format it on a mb 2.2, x.5.2

Will you use it on any non intel Macs?

If you want to use it with Windows also, then choose MS-DOS or FAT32. Otherwise, yes what you said is good.

what does partition do?
Partition sets up the disk from scratch, with the proper partitioning scheme and volume format. Happens quickly on small drives.

  1. Launch "Disk Utility"
  2. Select the drive {not the volume}
  3. Click on the PARTITION Tab
  4. On the Volume Scheme drop down choose "1 Partition"
  5. Click on Options & Choose "Apple Partition Map" {middle choice}. Click "OK"
  6. Type in a Name
  7. In the FORMAT drop down choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  8. Click on the "Apply" Button & wait a few moments.
  9. all done :wiggle:

Official Appled doc, basically instructs you to click on Disk Utility's HELP Menu...
