how much would you pay for a used 150GB WD Raptor drive? - tahoedrew - 10-14-2009

Got a good lead on one from Craigslist... it was originally listed at $40, now at $60, though the lister has said he admits he's adjusted the prices and would be willing to negotiate. I want to stick it into my 2.5GHz G5 as a boot drive to replace the current 160GB drive (there's a 1TB WD "Green" drive in the other slot for media and storage).

So, while I bit immediately at $40, $60 seems less like a RYF. I don't know if I even want it bad enough to offer him $50, so thinking of just saying I'll buy it for $40 but nothing more, am I driving an IMPOSSIBLE bargain?

I've seen 750GB drives for near $60.

Ah, didn't notice the Raptor part.

$30 tops.

I replaced my boot drive Raptor with a Samsung 1TB F1 {7200/32MB}, new with warranty for $80 from newegg. The F1 has much better throughput.

There has been a lot of improvement in the average new 1 TB drive since the Raptor came out. What do you want it for? A SSD can whoop on a Raptor in most benchmarks while using a quarter of the power.

Does anyone really need a 10K drive for use in anything besides a server where latency is critical?

On your boot drive and applications drive, which should be the same drive, it makes a big difference.

I want it for a boot drive in a 2.5GHz PowerMac G5. It's a G5, so an SSD would be complete overkill, not to mention if I was going to spend several hundred on drives I'd buy some 1TB drives and a Jive cage for the G5.

Yes, it is a 10K drive, and as I stated in the post, it would replace the current 160GB boot drive as all my files/media are located on the 1TB drive.

FWIW I can find the 74 gig for +/- $40 refurb and $70 new.
