Do you put tennis (athletic) shoes in washer/dryer? - AAA - 10-14-2009
I usually just hand-clean. But today I thought I would run them through the wash. Mainly to clean the shoestrings. If they get ruined, I can get a new pair of clean ones today. If not, then they'll be clean(er).
Actually, I put them on delicate. They are done. But I am not happy. So going all the way the other way ... to heavy!

regular tennis/running shoes i will. just the other day i debated whether to do that with my son's leather basketball type shoes. consensus on the net leaned toward washer on delicate okay but no dryer. the shoes emerged considerably cleaner, none the worse for the experience, and, with the help of a box fan, dried in a day.

We wash all of our sneakers (nylon and leather ones) without issue. I don't bother using the gentle cycle, but we have a front load washer so it may not be as hard on them as a top loader. Before our dryer rack broke, I would put the rack in the dryer and run it on low to help dry them out. Without it, it takes a day or so.

So, let me get this straight. The laces in your athletic shoes were dirty, so you washed the whole shoe? Wow, I can hardly wait to see what'll happen when a shoe lace breaks. Do you then toss the shoes in the trash?

I answered yes...
I HAVE... and may again, but don't routinely.
Usually a bit of water, a bit of soap, and a scrub brush and 3 minutes effort and a rinse does just fine.

All of my shoes have some leather bits.
I pull out the insoles, clean them lightly, and toss them in the wash. I also throw in a *little* bleach. The colors are none the worse for wear.
Drying them in a dryer is a little tough on leather. I usually let them air dry in a warm room.
And if I felt like just cleaning the laces, that's all that would go in the wash. I'd probably put them in a jeans' pocket or something so they don't get wound 'round the agitator.

we're talking about sneakers, right?
sometimes wash them in the machine, but not before a scrub with a brush and some soap.
i'm also conscious of the potential for damage to something in the machine, so I tend to avoid it for the sake of the machine

Years ago we had a bag with a rope that sneakers would go in (laces removed, but in the same bag.), the rope cinced the open end shut.
You could use a pillow case and knot the end or rubber band it to keep them in.
Less noise if in with regular laundry.
You could tie the laces to a pair of pants belt loop or a shirt button hole, too, and wash just the laces again. With other stuff seems to wash better.

Take off all mud that's easy to remove, run in washer on normal cycle. Dry in dryer, but not tumbling, just hot dry air circulating, not so much for the sake of the shoes or the dryer, but i hate that noise of stuff banging around the inside of the dryer.
