web content for iphone question - MacDoxy - 10-14-2009

if i make an app that links users to a website, does the website have to be manipulated or is the iphone capable of downloading regular websites ?

the website i have in mind has no video, no ads, no slideshows or clickable images.
only small images, text and links to other pages that are also the same.

(essentially i am trying to build an app for free for a small museum as a volunteer/intern with a simulator, without having an iphone physically in my hand)

Or something like that.

Don't use a website that uses Flash, as it's not supported on the 'Phone. A lot of sites have mobile versions that other phones need, and often get forced (by the webmaster, I guess) onto the 'Phone.

Amazon has a mobile site that's the default even for the iPhone, and I have to select the PC site every time.

you don't need to even involve an app on the iphone in the process. Just tell people " go to myurl.com on your iphone". Yes, iphones have a slightly modified safari browser installed by default and can render most pages just fine. Flash is not possible on the iphone (yet...though Adobe just announced a workaround of sorts in the upcoming CS5 suite), so stay away from that for now.

Just create a page that contains all important data within the pixel dimensions of the iphone screen for easiest browsing. If you're creating the page only for iphone/mobile use, keep it to the correct dimensions, even though it is possible for iphone users to zoom and scroll around on pages.

oh ok so it would be best if it was iphone dimensions but technically it can see everything but flash.

'cause i'm not making the site, i just thought it would be cool to have an app that linked you to current and upcoming shows and the classes that are available. if it was a good app they might get their webmaster to put an iphone friendly page, maybe.

(plus i get to learn how to make an app)

the idea is to accommodate ppl who might want to keep abreast of the current and/or upcoming shows which change every few weeks and to check on the current available classes and youth programs. this is all constantly updated online and i would link those pages to the app to make it all really simple to get this info and to have a way to stay on people's minds

i have yet to sit with the programs i got and figure the whole thing out

Can you make an app and make it available on your own website to download?

does it cost anything to list a free app on itunes?

thx
