I'm currently involved in vetting a massive data management service (we're talking $50,000 per year) for my main client, and am the point man for pre-vetting the web-based client to see if there are any issues with migration of our test databases. First try...it barely works at all. I called them up and they expressed astonishment that I was not using Internet Explorer. WTF?!? Our IT dept dumped IE a few years ago when it was having security issues and severe lack of features. We are standardized on Firefox and this supposedly international company doesn't support firefox. Who are they trying to kid? The tech person said they'd never had this problem before because all their clients use IE. Are they pulling my leg? Sure, IE has 65% of the market, but ALL of their clients?

Yes, I just arrived, and yes, I feel my employment is _extremely_ secure.
btw IE has 39.6% across all 3 very different versions according to w3schools. firefox has 46.6%

Let's see..
First; they only support a SINGLE browser? Strike one.
Second; they "said they'd never had this problem before because all their clients use IE" - bull or outright lie. Strike Two.
Three; they "expressed astonishment" to a customer testing their system for possible deployment/purchase. Strike Three.
They better dazzle your pants off - prefereably with a large kick back and a fun 4 day romp with a Brazillian model/prostitute in Rio, (with optional Cabana Boy package for your wife, of course) if they want to overcome this laughable shortcoming.

It always astonishes me when something is designed for IE. But for us in the Mac using world we've always been on the outside of "mainstream" computing, so anything that is by coincidence or intention Windows-centric always seems a bit silly.
However, it's 2009, not 2006. MS has updated IE with two major revisions in that time which alone I would think would present some kind of support challenge for any company developing for IE... especially if they were developing exclusively for IE. At some point it should make sense to them to support either FireFox or a webkit browser (both have cross-platform advantages; while FireFox has the market share it seems likely that webkit will quickly catch up as more mobile devices implement it.)
Anything browser-based that's been in development over the last 3 years really ought to open up and reap the advantages.

There are plenty of companies that use only IE to supposedly reduce support issues. Are they using Microsoft SQL and/or Visual Studio to manipulate the database and IE to access the reports? It is kind of intended to be a package. The term is dogfooding.

Businesses run on IE, pretty much.
We are a huge shop. Hardly any consideration is given for non-IE browser platforms.

My wife encountered the same issue; CARMLS, which is the State's real estate listing/etc. software, only supports IE 7 or newer running on Windows XP or newer. It's the only reason we have VMWare Fusion (and an XP license).

Active X. And yes, SAP's "Portal" "technology' is dependent on ActiveX and hence IE. Part of the agreement they foolishly signed with MS a couple of years ago.
