...it can buy me the latest box set of The Beatles in Mono.
It just arrived, and on first play is even better sounding than I'd expected! I'm in full on nostalgia mode now, remembering where I was (England) when I first heart a lot of these early songs.

I wonder exactly how many versions of the same Beatles songs some folks own? Vinyl, cassette, 8-track, CD, mono, stereo, British versions, American versions, bootleg versions, and so on and so forth.
Anyhoo, congratulations and enjoy. I'm just jealous.

That is the most I've ever paid for any bit of music, by a long shot. However, there are quite a few of the early albums in there that I don't have in any way shape or form, and most of the rest of them I have as vinyl and a couple of compilation albums "One", "Live at the BBC" on CD (plus some pirated MP3s my daughter happened to leave on my computer. I haven't wanted to get any of the digital early albums until now because both the mixes (stereo) and CD transformations were awful. So, my justification for paying $200 and change is that it's long delayed gratification.

I've been underwhelmed by the stereo mixes - I didn't realize that the stereo mix was done by the label with no input from the band. I'll have to give the monos a listen...

I got the mono set a few weeks back, it is absolutely amazing. Anyone who thinks the Beatles couldn't rock hard needs to give this a listen, their sound was incredibly powerful.

By the way, for you Beatles lovers, the Live at the BBC CD set is also a great set to have. The sound is truly raw and unpolished and gives you a good feel for the band as they would have been like listening to at a live concert.

My mono set came today too! I just finished looking at the booklet but I won't be listening tonight. It's a really nice package. I'd still like to locate the American release versions of their albums. I've got most of their 45's with the picture sleeves and a number of the original LPs but not all.

OK, Now I'm home and I've got this cranked up on my high-end 70s system (with added CD player) and it is absolutely awesome! There are so many early songs on here that I haven't heard in donkey's years and I love them all. You tend to forget how many songs get omitted on the radio station playlists. Time to get some mirror balls and have a dance party.
It's interesting to think about the "scene" that these guys were playing in. There just wasn't a rock and roll scene in existence, just some popular crooners, dance halls, left over stuff from the swing era and some really cool american blues record played mostly by old black guys (that figured very heavily into their inspiration). That's why they have quite a few "crooner" songs designed for playing in seaside dance halls and the like (similar to early Buddy Holly stuff). Then they went off from there to waters as yet uncharted, taking us all with them. I think it's probably quite difficult for folks who didn't grow up during that period to understand why so many of us "old folks" think these guys were music gods.

Wow! You still have your 45s!? I still remember going in to buy my first ever 45 (I Feel Fine/She's a Woman) in 1964 in a record shop in Gosport, England. I wish I still had it for nostalgia's sake. I do still have most all of my (well-worn but in surprisingly good shape still) Beatles LPs.
