Friday thoughts: Quotations about trees - voodoopenguin - 10-23-2009

My wife bought me a book of quotations for my recent birthday and I am enjoying the occasional dip in to it. In the section about trees there were some that were thought provoking, some intriguing and some quite bizarre. Let me share a few with you.

Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness.

Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees then names streets after them.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now.

When the axe came into the forest the trees all said "Well, at least the handle is one of us."

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing which stands in the way. As a man is, so he sees.

Trees cause more pollution than automobiles.

That last one was from Ronald Reagan and hopefully someone can explain the context under which it was said.

Happy Friday folks

Paul

Hey, those are pretty good, except for that nonsense from Reagan. 8-)

It also made me think of one of my favorite Rush tunes, "The Trees".

Rush
Hemispheres
The Trees

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced the're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the malpes all scream "Opression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads.

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"These oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

The best time to plant a tree. 20 years ago. Or right now.

TREES
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray,

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair

Upon whose blossom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems were made by fools like me
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer

As the poet said, "Only God can make a tree" - probably because it's so hard to figure out how to get the bark on. - Woody Allen

I had never heard of that quote before so I had to google it. I do remember Reagan saying something along the lines that we should just allow forest fires to burn instead of putting them out. There is actually a fair amount of controversy about this, since fire is a natural part of the life of a forest. This is especially true in the western part of the United States where the summers are extremely dry, and lightning touches off many fires.

On the context of your quote I found this:

"Ronald Reagan's infamous claim that "trees cause more pollution than automobiles" contained a grain of truth. In warm weather, trees release volatile chemicals that act as catalysts for smog. But the Gipper didn't mention another point that's even more likely to make nature lovers blanch. When it comes to fighting climate change, it's more effective to treat forests like crops than like majestic monuments to nature.
Over its lifetime, a tree shifts from being a vacuum cleaner for atmospheric carbon to an emitter. A tree absorbs roughly 1,500 pounds of CO2 in its first 55 years. After that, its growth slows, and it takes in less carbon. Left untouched, it ultimately rots or burns and all that CO2 gets released."

"The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my favorite leadership quotes.

Shade trees can help reduce the cost air conditioning in the summer months.

I know a guy who just paid to have all the trees on his lot cut down and wants his neighbor to trim the trees that hang over the property line. Sad
