PSA: Nylon spoons and spatulas for cooking... - Doc - 10-25-2009

I'm getting rid of my nylon cooking implements.

They are labeled for use in cooking at up to 400 degrees.

I've always been a little suspicious of the claim that they are safe for cooking, but now I've come up with a test that demonstrates that there are chemicals from them getting into my food.

I stirred a batch of iced tea with a nylon spoon and neglected to remove it when I put the jug of tea in the fridge. Five hours later, I noticed the spoon in the tea and removed it and then poured some tea. The tea had a plastic resin flavor.

I repeated this experiment with each of my nylon spoons and spatulas, finding that they all leached something with a nasty flavor into the cold tea if they were permitted to sit all night in the fridge.

Some of these implements were several years old and had been used and washed dozens of times. Others were only a couple of years old.

Chemical reactions are slower at cold temperatures than at hot temps. A batch of fried vegetables or a creamy soup is probably more acidic than iced tea... WTF have these implements been putting into my hot foods?

I'm replacing the spoons with wooden spoons and the spatulas with silicone spatulas.

In that life expectancy has increased since such products were introduced possibly those chemicals are good for you.

Have you conducted identical tests with utensils made of wood or other plastics?

I guarantee that the wood will seep flavor into the tea. They don't put whiskey in wooden barrels for nothing.

Why would anyone leave their utensils soaking in the food in the first place?

I still use metal and wood and have never had any nylon or silicon utensils. Those things are just marketing ploys to get you to spend your hard earned money on stuff you don't need. Smile

Obesity is the cause of many illnesses, and is preventable. Don't know what it has to do with nylon though.

Silicone spatulas are nice for their heat resistance if you're looking for an excuse to buy them.

I picked up a couple of silicone spatulas this week. I'll test them after they've been run through the dishwasher a few times.

I also got some wooden and steel utensils today. 'Not gonna test the wood or steel. In addition to the near certainty that it would impart some flavor to the tea, leaving a wooden spoon soaking all night would probably ruin the spoon... and I don't think that a steel spaghetti spoon poses a potential health risk.
