How can I view my LAN's bandwidth? - deckeda - 10-25-2009

Example:
I'm streaming music from the Internet, sent to this laptop over 802.11g.
The laptop is then sending that stream wirelessly back to my router so that my AirPort Express can pick it up. The AE is wired.

Anyway, I'd be interested in a graph or something that shows me in real time how much is going where and by what method within my LAN, and also how much my WAN is being saturated (we have VIOP also, and it's only a 1.5Mbps connection to the ISP.)

You can launch Activity Monitor and hit the network tab - with Music streaming off and on. Audio streaming doesn't take much bandwidth. If the average MP3 file is 1 megabyte per minute, then streaming is only consuming 1000000/60 = .16 Mbps + plus a percentage for overhead.

I'll check it out, thanks.

I don't know of an app that will show you an overview for the entire LAN (short of a server solution) but I have Menu Meters installed that gives me a constant readout of network activity both in and out of the computer.

The developers who make iStat Pro also make a similar app. Sits up in the menu bar.

And if you click on the network readings in Menu Meters (when displayed in the menu bar) you can get a readout of each connection.

My router (asus wl-520gu) has tomato installed.

I can view real-time bandwidth usage of wireless and ethernet. It also stores monthly bandwidth usage statistics. It's quite handy.

I have that router. In the box. I shoehorned Tomato on it but shelved it when I couldn't easily get the USB port to do anything. I may give it another shot again, maybe with DD-WRT or just the ASUS firmware.

If I recall I had to upgrade to the latest firmware and then installed tomato.

I'm very happy with Tomato. It's been running for about 8 months without a restart. I've customized my QoS to my liking and I've got a USB flash drive hooked up as a NAS. My last linksys required 2 reboots a day.
