Video on the iPod nano question - voodoopenguin - 10-26-2009

My wife is really interested in the new iPod nano and I will most likely be buying her one for Christmas. She has an older one but 2Gb is a bit small these days and she likes the idea of the radio. We both wear reasonably sophisticated pedometers all day so I'm not sure whether that feature would be used but I'm trying to find out about the video. According to the Apple Store it can "Shoot high-quality video" but I cannot find any specifications as in frame rate and resolution. I don't expect it to be particularly good but was wondering how it compares to say my camera or phone both of which can do video. I see it has a built in microphone but is there any way to plug another one in?

Hey Paul,

I have one and the video is pretty good quality, though it's not HD or anything like that. It's *much* better than my MyTouch 3G phone.

I'm sure you can add an external mic, but I don't know much about that.

Anyway, here's what Apple has to say about it:

http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html

"Video Capture

H.264 VGA video, 640 by 480 pixels, up to 30 frames per second with AAC audio
15 real-time special effects: Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch, and Twirl
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats"

Thanks, missed that link on the page. Good to hear about someone's actual experience as well.

MyTouch 3G phone

What is that, exactly? The older 3G 'Phone relegated to iPod duty? That's what I did with my 2G 'Phone. Jailbroken for video?

The 3GS has the same video specs as the nano, from what I remember. I think Apple waited for the faster processor before giving video to the 3GS.

It's the updated version of the Google MyTouch phone for T-Mobile:

Ah, thanks.

That was completely off my radar.
