do you sign your credit cards? - Fritz - 11-23-2009

The USPS has recently decided not to take credit cards without ID check and signed cards. The ID check I can certainly see.
But I haven't signed a credit card in 30 years as that's just giving it away; should you leave it, lose it, whatever.
Maybe that's just years of traveling. But if the hotel clerk, waitress, etc is getting $10/hr, they have no real incentive to protect your lost, left or whatever card.
Seems a sig on the spot with and ID check would be a better then a signed card.
And you?

Mine are all signed "Ask For ID"

Just don't leave it blank because then anyone can sign it and it will look legit.

I think the 'Ask for ID' age has passed. My USPS office has had a sign for at least 3 years saying they won't accept un-signed credit cards. If you think of how many places today you pay with plastic where no employee actually handles the card, it's not much of a safeguard. Any kind of automated gas pump, most convenience stores don't even require a signature on their card swipe device for less than a $25 charge anymore, and even on larger purchases, many just require you to swipe the card and sign on the card reader, never handing it to the cashier. All the websites that just want the card number, expiration date, and the code from the signature line.

More and more stores are actually CHECKING. I always say "thanks for checking".

I do but it always rubs off.

Funny you should ask. I just took during the last two hours training on Bank Secrecy Act
Data Security
Patriot Act.

I used to write 'check for ID'. (or "ask for ID" )

Not too many cashiers ever looked at the back.
I think I stopped when my state went to non SS numbers on drivers license and decided to protect that number instead.
Or maybe when we did have SS on a driver's license and that was an easy identity theft method.

USPS has had this policy for quite some time. I had "see ID" on a card ~15 years ago and they wouldn't take it. The guy actually brought out some USPS manual and showed me where it said they wouldn't take it unless it's signed.

Does it matter if it looks legit or not? All the USPS checks is if it's signed. I don't think most people are capable of doing any sort of visual hand writing verification.
