Cultural Awareness! - graylocks - 11-24-2009

i joined Blockbuster Online so I could inexpensively get caught up on 30 Rock. (one disk in-store rentals are up to $4.99!)

since we'll only do the sub for 6 weeks, i thought i'd expose my son to a crash course in films that are left an American cultural imprint. you know, those films where story and acting were more important than special effects. (well, okay, so i did include the 10 Commandments...) so far i've queued 1940 - 1959.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Rebel Without a Cause [Special Edition] (1955)
12 Angry Men (1957)
On The Waterfront (1954)
The Caine Mutiny [Collector's Edition] (1954)
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957)
The Ten Commandments: Anniversary Collection [3 Discs]
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Casablanca

of course there are more classic films from that era but these are ones i thought he'd have the patience for. any other must-sees from that timespan?

The day the Earth stood still?

David and Lisa?

West Side Story?

Hitchcocks?

Taking "left an American cultural imprint" a little bit more literally, but still some very fine films-
In the Heat of the Night
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
The WIld Ones
Nine to Five
Easy Rider
La Cage aux Folles

I'd include Last Tango in Paris, but maybe that's a little too "ambitious" for him at this point.

We've done #1 and #3 in the past. He loved West Side Story! I think the only Hitchcock we've done is The Birds. I'll have to look up David and Lisa; one of those titles I've known but not actually seen the movie.

oh yeah, most of those are after 1959 but we'll move on to those decades at some point. As for Last Tango - he can watch that in college without Mom sitting next to him...

I never laughed so hard as when I watched The Wild Ones. I kept waiting for it to cut back to SNL but it just kept on going. Brando acted and looked very gay(Southpark style) with his hat, tight pants and leather coat. I'm sure at the time he was going for 'tough' but the times have changed and I could only laugh. My favorite parT was when they invaded the diner and played JAZZ on the jukebox. Oh the scandal.

I'm thinking Citizen Kane and The Grapes of Wrath would be good additions to the list.

ah, yes, Citizen Kane! i didn't include Grapes of Wrath as I prefer him to have read a literary classic before he sees a movie version.
