Anybody ever shop Safeway.com for home grocery delivery? - AlphaDog - 12-01-2009

I have a couple of coupons good for free delivery and thought I might try it, since I can't get to a store. If any of you use it, do you have any helpful hints to offer? I was, for example, looking at meats and wondering how a person would ever select a steak online. How about fresh fruits and vegetables? Are the foods selected carefully, like we would if we were in the store in person?

I do have a son and a couple of friends who are willing to shop for me, but this would be a good option - whenever it's free anyway. Smile

Thank you!

I receved a gift pack from Omaha Steaks. The meat was excellent but, I do think it's very expensive. Especially considering that their steaks are small. Sometime the coupon specials they offer bring the price closer to reality. I think a person could do just as well by talking to a local butcher (even one who works in a supermarket) and, letting them educate you. In my area, supermarket butchers have always been very receptive and helpful when I talk with them.

Several of my neighbors use PeaPod delivery service (affiliated with Albertson's chain) and they say it is great. There is a truck here at my high rise several times a week.

I haven't used it, but from what I understand, you can specify how ripe you want your fruits, how lean your cuts of meat should be, how thin to slice deli selections and the like.

I have a feeling that the people they use to do the "shopping" are careful to follow instructions- after all, the goal is to get you to use the service again.

Good luck!

We have two chains offering online purchasing:
Safeway and Raley's (Northern Cal)
IME, Safeway is a distant second; frequent deliveries w/missing items, failure to notify if an item is out of stock, etc.
Safeway charges $8.95 to deliver and you must be available for a four hour period. Raley's does not deliver but only charges $4.95 to pull, bag and when you arrive, load your loot into your car *and* they will have it ready in a 1/2 hour window.
Raley's OTOH *always* calls if/when a substitution is nec., one can attach a note to each item ordered, e.g., "smallest Brussels Sprouts please" and so on.
Just my experience, YMMV

Thank you for relating your experience. Up here, Safeway is the only game for home delivery, and there are no stores offering anything remotely like Raley's. I figure I'll just try Safeway and see what happens.
