Have you ever been web spammed? - Buzz - 12-01-2009

dopey me signed up for one of my favorite vendor's better than usual Cyber Monday giveaways yesterday... turns out that by doing so, I supposedly agreed to receive an endless spamming of banner ads that monopolize my browsing history... did not see that in fine print, and the contest is over and the fine print no longer accessible... called 'em and they said they'd try to shut it down for me, but the whole thing is just plain rude! in the mean time, how do you filter out a specific site in Safari starting with:

http://social.bidsystem.com...

???

thanks,
Buzz

Huh?

The banner ads that they insert on Facebook, etc. can't redirect your browser sessions automatically. The links shouldn't be in your browser history unless you click on them.

As for blocking stuff like that, as a Firefox user with AdBlock and NoScript installed, I've got none of that BS to deal with.

To block links to that site entirely, you might edit your /private/etc/hosts file, adding these lines at the bottom:

cubics.com 127.0.0.1
bidsystem.com 127.0.0.1
204.137.28.31 127.0.0.1

Note that you need admin privileges to edit that file.

Thanks Doc, OK, maybe more clarification needed...

Browser history fills up w/ a whole bunch of URL's starting w/ social.bidsystem.com..., and ending w/ a series of consecutive numbers after an equals sign. There is no visible window open, and none shown under the Window menu associated w/ the listing shown under the browser history. Clicking on one of the history entries opens a blank page w/ a banner ad at the top, w/ usually some sort of "click here" or "click now" button. If left alone, the banner changes every minute or so, and generates another entry in the history list. It seems to be associated w/ having a tab or window open to the vendor's site; if the vendor's site, or a solo banner window is not up on the browser, the browser is normal, so for years I have left the vendor's site open, unless they truly stop tossing up this crud, they're gonna lose my business. Any other ideas to make it stop? Thanks,

Buzz

Disable Java and JavaScript in your pref's.

Stop visiting that site.

Use Firefox (with the aforementioned add-ons) instead of Safari.
