appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - lazydays - 12-02-2009 I have an appletv that is distorting on any loud music. It is acutely noticeable when listening to piano music where a single key might come through very loudly. I'm hoping to get some help diagnosing the problem. I used David Lanz Improvisation Friedensengel as my test song and Grado SR125 headphones. I have the appltv hdmi running into a tv and then the tv's normal audio outputs to my accuphase (fairly high end) amplifier aux1 input. I also have the appletv normal audio outputs running into the tape2 inputs of the amplifier. I started by playing the song using the appletv, going thru the tv, and then to the amp aux1. Massive distortion even if I turned the volume on the appletv down to 2 bars and the tv volume down to 15%. No way to eliminate the distortion. Then I tried going straight from the appletv to the amp using the tape2 input. Very little, but still noticeable distortion at approx 22 seconds. I hooked my ipod up to the tv and played the same song. No distortion as long as I kept the ipod volume to about 75%. Then I went downstairs and played the same song on another appletv connected to a tv using hdmi and then to another accuphase amp using standard audio inputs. No distortion at all. So I carried appletv number 2 upstairs and hooked it up. Using hdmi massive distortion but absolutely no distortion using the standard outputs. Last, I updated the original appletv to the latest software but it still distorts. I'm up pretty late but I think this means I have a bad appletv. Anything left for me to do before I try to return it? Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - space-time - 12-02-2009 lazydays wrote: first, disregard the problem when going though the TV. You don't know if it's the Apple TV or just the TV that does the distortion. Now do this: take Apple TV [#1] downstairs and see if you get distortions there. then you can pinpoint the problem more accurately. Also try Apple TV [#1] upstairs on a Aux1 input. Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - lazydays - 12-02-2009 space-time, thank you for your help. "take Apple TV [#1] downstairs and see if you get distortions there. then you can pinpoint the problem more accurately." I did this and appletv #1 still distorts even downstairs. "Also try Apple TV [#1] upstairs on a Aux1 input." I tried this and it still distorts. I also swapped in appletv #3 upstairs and found distortion on the hdmi connection but no distortion on the normal audio out going to tape2. So today I think I will see about replacing the hdmi connection and also see about replacing the bad appletv. If you have any more suggestions please let me know. Sure, if this was an elementary school teacher correcting third-grader's How I Spent My Summer Vacation papers. Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - lazydays - 12-02-2009 I don't care about the corrections. I just wanted help with my problem. So far space-time is the only one who has tried to help me so I'm giving him a pass on the grammer issues. You guys are doing a great job of thread jacking though. :-) Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - RAMd®d - 12-02-2009 You guys are doing a great job of thread jacking though. Happy to help. I'd suggest you to to the Apple Discussions forums and see if somebody has had a similar problem. There may be an answer there. Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - lazydays - 12-02-2009 I picked up a new hdmi cable at radio shake. Damn thing cost me $50!!! That was the least expensive one they had too. If it fixes the sound problem when using hdmi I guess it will be worth it. Re: appletv sound problems, somewhat detailed - guitarist - 12-02-2009 By going to Radio Shack, you paid an extra $40 for convenience and instant gratification. If you'd had the time and patience, you could have purchased a good quality HDMI cable for 1/5 that price. But you got the problem solved immediately, which must be a relief. Next time you need an HDMI cable, you will hopefully have the time to price compare and order one online. But for now, think of it as a convenience tax, and don't worry about it. |
