Saves $35 off new, not sure if that is worth it to anyone but this one doesn't pop up a lot. This is the USM silent focus motor so it is quieter than the 50mm 1.8 version.

I used to have this lens on my FTb way back. Very sweet. I have the 1.8 now but don't use it that often. Mostly do portraiture and I need at least 85 and above, perhaps closer to 100. Love my 85/1.8 though.

Gaak, I think I just might to have to get the Nikon 50mm f/1.4.
Was shooting at a benefit last night and was wishing for that focal length and speed so many times it isn't funny. Mostly shot with the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, which is pretty good considering its age, but not fabulous.

You mean you had the FD (breach lock, manual focus) lens, not the EF (EOS, auto focus and USM) lens this thread is about.

Just be aware that you can't slap the G Nikkors on older film nikons that don't support the G type setup or else you can't control the aperture. The previous version had a manual/auto aperture control.

Hey pRICE cUBE (and others)— What do you think of the very inexpensive (and cheap?) Canon 50mm 1.8 that you mention? Adorama reviews say it's pretty good optically even though the plastic build quality is in line with it's very low price. Has anyone used this lens?
The reason I ask is that I would also like to get the 28mm 1.8 lens and at $480 I can't swing that and the $350 for the 50mm 1.4 here (which is very tempting). I'm currently using the 2 kit lenses (18-55, 55-250, both f3.5-5.6) with my T1i and an not impressed with the sharpness of the images from these lenses (not to mention the slow f ratio). I'm mostly shooting at 8MP as I see practically no difference in sharpness between this and the 15MP resolution, especially indoors sans flash (I prefer natural lighting) where I usually get ISO 800-1600.

I have this lens and while I am not a fan of the plastic mount, the affordability for performance per dollar is great. The motor isn't silent but it is not too loud, I have used it to takes pics of babies and they aren't distracted by it. Well worth the affordable pice.
