Airport Extreme Question - space-time - 12-02-2009 I have an Airport extreme that I am abot to set up, but before I open the box, I still have some questions (it was in impulse buy, but I wanted one for a long time anyway). does it support VPN, DynDNS (or another dymamic service), does it allow me to see the USB drive from work (I assume I have to use VPN to get in). Also, is it easy to customize, can I set up port forwarding and NAT and other stuff like that? right now I have a weird network setup Cable Modem -> Voip_1 -> Router (Wifi) > Voip_2 and of course, some WiFi devices. I have both VOIP_1 and Router with DHCP enabled (a big NO NO as far as I understand) and despite that, I can still get iChat video connections working properly, but screen sharing only works when I connect the MacBook directly to the cable modem. I hope with the Apple Extreme Router I would be able to connect something like this: Cable Modem > Apple Airport Extreme > VOIP_1 eventually I will disconnect VOIP_2 after I port the number to OOMA, but then I may get a VOIP_4 to replace my verizon landline (again, don't ask why I have so many VOIP phones) Re: Airport Extreme Question - space-time - 12-02-2009 oh, one more question: I have a 1 TB USB drive that I will hook up, and I need to format it. I would really like to "zero" it since I had it partitioned in several ways and sometimes I got errors, just to make sure the drive is OK. If I do that with my PowerBook, it's gonna take forever, so I wonder if I can ask the Apple Airport Router to do a low level format and let it run for a day or 2 until it's done Thanks again Re: Airport Extreme Question - Go To Top - 12-03-2009 The Apple site has great tuff. I love my Extreme. Re: Airport Extreme Question - RAMd®d - 12-03-2009 You can zero the drive, but you can't do a low-level format. And the router doesn't zero the drive. Connect it to a computer. It'll take awhile; not much you can do to speed it up. Re: Airport Extreme Question - space-time - 12-03-2009 how do I do a low level format? Windows? |
