I am actually surprized it took them that long. Verizon had several servers available to the public for years. Same with Open DNS. what took google so long?

do you think there is a real advantage to using
these DNS numbers?
can it be expected that small ISP businesses use crappy
equipment which are hopelessly outclassed by theGoog ?

Use Network Utility to ping the DNS servers (Google, Verizon, et. al.). Use the one with the fastest response...
Edit: I just tried it and Verizon is 3X faster (4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2) for me...
