Beach Trip Ideas - dotman - 12-03-2009 i have a few weeks off and would like to go somewhere and stay on the beach and just chill. staying in the states would be fine, but am open to other ideas. I'd like to keep the costs as low as i can. anyone have ideas where i could find a good sunny place, have a room on good beach and not pay a fortune? I figure i won't be in the hotel much, so accomodations need not be premium, but i would like to just walk out and it be there without having to drive. I hear Florida is nice, but what location? dot. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - bik - 12-03-2009 Florida Keys are great. Maybe Marathon or Key West. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - ztirffritz - 12-03-2009 Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. http://www.cashewhilllodge.co.cr/rates.htm http://www.cashewhilllodge.co.cr/aboutpuerto.htm http://www.cashewhilllodge.co.cr/gethere.htm I'm not sure what your budget is, but compared to other beach vacations, this one was tops for me. The owners of the lodge are Eric and Wendy. They are the nicest people and extremely helpful. They helped to arrange travel, hotel, taxis buses, tours, you name it. It was tops in my book. This IS NOT a resort town. It is a poor community on the coast of Costa Rica, but it was safe, the people were friendly, the food was good, the beer was cold, the beaches were beautiful. We rented 2 bikes for the week and loved it. The lodge has/had two large mastiff guard dogs named Ozzie and Elvis. They greeted guests and "patrolled" the grounds. We flew into San Juan, took a bus to Puerto Viejo, then just crashed* for a bit. Another alternative, would be the panhandle of Florida. Ft. Walton Beach. *by 'crashed' I mean we relaxed. We sat on the deck in a hammock drinking beers, reading books, and just enjoying the Costa Rican lifestyle..Pura Vida. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - dotman - 12-04-2009 my brother was telling me about the u.s. virgin islands. anyone been to st.thomas, st.croix or st.johns? Any preferences or places to recommend? dot. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - olnacl - 12-04-2009 Northern FL can be cool this time of year. If you're planning on being on the beach, I'd choose somewhere south of Cocoa Beach like Ft Lauderdale, miami, or as mentioned above, the Keys. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - Mike Johnson - 12-04-2009 What airport would you fly out of? It makes a big difference. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - dotman - 12-04-2009 probably detroit. dot. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - rz - 12-04-2009 There are very few beaches in the keys. It's mostly rocky shoreline. And Key West, where there are a couple of small sand beaches, is not cheap. I was in Naples, FL recently (we have a condo there) and while the weather can be nice, I thought the water was just starting to get a little chilly for my tastes. Of course, if you're coming from the north, 75 degree water may not be chilly to you. However, Naples ain't cheap either. If you like calm, warmer water, I'd look in St Pete, Clearwater, or even Sarasota area. If you're more into waves, somewhere like Vero Beach is relatively inexpensive. Re: Beach Trip Ideas - AlphaDog - 12-04-2009 I can't remember who told me about this place, but it might have been swampy. I have relatives in Sarasota, so I've never been able to stay at a hotel, but I think I'd try this one if I could ever sneak into town without anybody knowing. I don't have a clue about rates, but the beach is absolutely gorgeous. You might find there's no such thing as "inexpensive" if you're going around the holidays, though. http://www.gulfbeachsarasota.com/ |
