Since it isn't good form to kill your fellow human beings, like the ahole that had his bright lights--so bright that it felt like my retinas were going to be burned out--on behind me for 10 miles early this morning, like my employees who did squat on my day off--: ), I went for the next best thing.
I needed to watch a movie where zombies were killed en masse. Of course, the metaphor being the mindless people I dealt with all day....
Zombieland starts out strong, with humor and a the required gore.
The rules for zombie killing, illustrated as they were, are humorous.
When Woody was playing the banjo to the tune of Deliverance to lure the zombies, that well might be the highest form of zombie movie making--ever.
Unfortunately, somewhere in the middle, it all bogs down. Let it be known, the Bill Murray can kill the fun in any movie.
Maybe Murray was a metaphor as well for the muse that died on the writing staff.
Fortunately, the carnage continues towards the end, but it seems as if two people wrote this movie.
The first half of the movie was pure genius as zombie flicks go.
The final half was written by a meterosexual whose greatest interest in life was to write a love story. Even though, up to the that point, this was a kickass movie, said meterosexual had to introduce feelings, mush, and 20 minutes of no killing whatsoever to fulfill his needs as a "serious writer".
But I ask, what about my needs for gore? And action?
Fortunately, I think the meterosexual was eaten by a zombie and the zombie movie genius wrote the rest of the script at the very end, as humor and mass killing of the mindless undead reached a fevered crescendo.
My need for humor and bloodlust was satiated and I can highly recommend Zombieland, especially if it is showing at a cheapie theater like where I saw it ($3.00).
And tomorrow, I'll just keep repeating to myself, they are just mindless....and keep smiling : )

My thoughts exactly... all I could say to anyone interested in it was "It had so much potential..."

mik, exactly. It had great potential. If the middle 20 minutes could be spliced out it would be a short but near perfect zombie movie.

It is a zombie movie. I didn't go with high expectations but I did enjoy the movie. The hype is what killed it.
