Well, I had hoped for the best but unfortunately it didn't turn out the way I wanted.
In a nutshell, the car isn't worth the airfare, towing, storage fees etc. so I'm giving it to the yard where it's stored for them to auction. I called the Tucson AZ region looking for someone (scrap dealer etc.) to buy it but it's so old no one would give me anything for it.
So, in the end I got royally screwed by some jerk...too bad, it wasn't a bad little car. In all the years I owned it I was never stranded once. Twelve years and change.
I'll be going home and having a drink, or two, or three...or maybe until I lose count.

so the car turned up in Tucson? where was is stolen from? I glanced at the original thread but I didn't see any location mentioned in there (no, I didn't read the whole thread)

So sorry to hear about it. We can throw platitudes, but it sucks, pure and simple. And made worse because the bastiches that did it got away with it, and killed your ride. We'll all raise a glass in memory of 'ol faithful.
And plot for the anti-theft system in the next version. Despite the evil Dark Empire nature of General Motors, that OnStar system is sure proving to have some interesting anti-theft features. For example- a US Congressman's daughter was carjacked recently in DC, and the OnStar people helped catch the bad guys within an hour.

My bad, the car turned up in Tucson AZ, 500 miles away. Stolen from Los Angeles, the car was found at a park with some dude living in it for a few days. Yes, I'm pressing charges, I'm sure he'll be out in 60 days.
To top it off, I get my car stolen and I'm responsible for impound fees at the lot it's being stored. Where is the justice in all of this?

any time your car ends up in impound, you are responsible for fees.
friend of mine had her car stolen, she found it with the help of some friends a few days later. called the cops, they could barely be bothered (this is in Allentown PA, in a crime-ridden area).
they told her she could take it, or they could impound it to dust for prints & she'd have to pay the daily impound fees.
she took it.

Maybe not what you want to hear but people get mugged, knocked unconscious, and left for dead every day-- it's just a hunk of metal amd a ding on your bank account.

We had a car towed from an area near the local stadium which had no "no parking" signs. Had to pay both a ticket and the tow lot fee. It wasn't fair, but wasn't worth contesting. (And contesting would only deal with the ticket, not the tow fee. What a scam.)
I agree with you that sometimes there isn't justice. Sorry you got stuck.

With law enforcement increasingly ignoring property crimes as "too much trouble" - expect this sort of thing to get more and more common....
Best you can hope for is to run into the thief in a dark alley some day when there are no witnesses, and you're holding a nice iron pipe.
It's only vigilantism if you don't give the Law the opportunity to exact justice. If they punt it back, and there's no question of guilt... well... The experience should be made memorable to the thief. And painful.
