Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - spacescape - 12-06-2009 I have a 5 Lbs. pork butt that we are hoping to make Pulled Pork sandwiches tomorrow with. Anyone know of any "simple" recipes? We are leaving for 3-4 hours in the afternoon so I really cannot babysit it. It's 20 degrees here in detroit so firing up the grill for 4 hours isn't my idea of a good idea! ![]() Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - M>B> - 12-06-2009 A few recipes here... http://www.recipesource.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?search_string=Pulled+Pork&any=on Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - Spock - 12-06-2009 This one looks good and easy. http://southernfood.about.com/od/pulledporkrecipes/r/bl103c4.htm Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - lazydays - 12-06-2009 My wife likes to smoke the pork for a couple of hours, then cook on low heat in the oven overnight, then switch to crock pot in the morning. It is incredibly tasty and very easy to tear apart. Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - wurm - 12-06-2009 I just looked for our "recipe", but came to realize that it's nothing more complicated than a pork tenderloin in a slow cooker with the contents of a bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce poured over it. I think we just put it on low in the morning and have it for dinner that night. Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - BernDog - 12-06-2009 wurm wrote: This works for us too. I'm sure you could impart more flavor by smoking, grilling, or doing a voodoo dance over it, but this is pretty darn easy and pretty darn good for the effort. Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - Mike Johnson - 12-06-2009 I make this from time to time on the stovetop, since we don't have a slow cooker. I usually don't flavor it a whole lot, except for some onion, salt, and pepper. It's more versatile that way. When I make sandwiches/tacos/omelets out of it, that's when I season it. Mix it with barbecue sauce, or salsa, or teriyaki, or whatever. Broil it if you want to brown the meat & sauce a little. My favorite is a sandwich with Thai Kitchen Barbecue Sauce, red onions, cucumbers, cilantro, and mint. My wife's favorite is probably sopes with a tomatillo/pineapple salsa. Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - Kate - 12-06-2009 I've cooked pork butts in a slow cooker for years. I used to put the bbq sauce in with the meat and just let it go, but often found way too much grease, and pulling the pork was really messy. Then I started just putting the pork butt in by itself, with some dry seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic powder, whatever) and cooking it till it fell apart. Then I take it out and pull all the meat (it's still messy, but not as bad), put the juice aside, discard the huge fat chunks, etc. Then put the pulled meat back in the cooker, along with the juice (pulling off the obvious grease in the liquid) THEN put in the sauce for an hour or so. It comes out just as flavorful and not near as greasy. My very favorite recipe involves doing the above, then adding a can (or two, depending on how much meat you have) of whole Hatch chiles, drained and cut into bite size pieces, a chopped onion or two, as much chopped garlic as you like (I usually put in two whole heads, but I'm of the "there can't be too much garlic" persuasion), about 6 tblsp of ground cumin, 2 tblsp of red chile powder and whatever else my taste requires on any given day. I usually mix the dry spices in with some juice from the chiles. If you need more liquid you can also add more drained chile juice. I've taken this to potlucks for years, and it is always a huge hit. It also freezes well for later. DO NOT SKIMP ON THE SPICES and this is a surefire winner. Kate Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - Norm - 12-06-2009 McCormicks has a Pulled Pork seasoning at all grocery stores. $1.29 I have used numerous times, Comes out great. Norm Re: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork? - spacescape - 12-06-2009 Well, put the pork butt in the slow cooker this morning. Kept it simple this time. Sliced some onion on the bottom, 1" of water, seasoned with sea salt, pepper and a special mix that I purchased from the farmers market that is great and then put some more slices of onions on the top... I started a little late so it's been on high for a few hours and getting ready to put it back on low. If it's not done in time for dinner I'll just shred it tonight, add sauce and onions and then have the wife turn it on tomorrow afternoon for dinner. Will let everyone know how it turns out! |
