Do you remember where you were on this date in 1986? - SDGuy - 01-28-2010 Just realized that today is the 24th anniversary of the Challenger disaster. Myself and all of my roommates at the time (college Juniors) were awakened by one of our friends who entered our apartment (someone must have left the door unlocked) and woke us up with shouts of "the shuttle just blew up!" After shaking off the grogginess, we quickly turned on the TV. A VHS tape was ready to go in the VCR, so I recorded the news coverage for posterity. I can still remember Dan Rather's voice (probably because of his gaffe): "...a major man malfunction..." My other memories of this are of how the Morton Thiokol management told the engineers to "take off their engineering hats and put on their management hats" to see if their decision (go/no-go on launching) would change. This is something I remember to this day and think about whenever I feel pressure to compromise my engineering for political purposes. Teachers brought in another class into ours and rolled in a TV so we could all see it. Re: Do you remember where you were on this date in 1986? - timg - 01-28-2010 I was between classes in Ann Arbor. Watched the news updates in my dorm room. Re: Do you remember where you were on this date in 1986? - pinkoos - 01-28-2010 jardster wrote: Sophomore high school Spanish class. In the Library @HS, someone who always mouths off walked in and said the shuttle just blew up. Ha ha not funny. A library worker turns on a small TV he has in his office and we found out for ourselves. We wheeled the giant TV (27" CRT— giant, eh?) into the student center so everyone could see that sickening footage rolled over and over. Not a good day. Re: Do you remember where you were on this date in 1986? - pinkoos - 01-28-2010 I think the (sick) joke about what does N.A.S.A. stand for started making rounds at school within a day or so. Kids can be so cruel! Re: Do you remember where you were on this date in 1986? - TLB - 01-28-2010 Savanah River Plant, Aiken SC. I had actually driven down to KSC the previous summer to view the 20th shuttle launch. |
