Anybody actually watch any of those iPad hands-on videos? That thing is *fast* - pinkoos - 01-29-2010
I watched Engadget's hands-on video yesterday evening (there are many floating around from all the main tech websites) and the one thing that struck me was that this thing is much faster at everything than an iPhone or iPod touch could ever be.
I highly recommend that you guys watch one of these videos before dismissing the iPad as a giant touch or phone.
I think SJ's "one more thing" was a very modest comment that this thing is run by this A4 chip.

It's got a 1GHz G5 in it! For what it does, with its own GPU, it SHOULD be fast.
It COULD be a lot faster --- check out that MacWorld article a thread or two down. That company
that Apple bought - 150 engineers did to a G5 what IBM could not.

Speed is always good and faster is usually always better. But on my 3g touch, I don't really notice speed issues at all. Is there something that I am supposed to be doing in which the speed is even remotely an issue?
It seems to slow down when I am on a sketchy wifi connection, but I didn't think that was related to the touch's speed, more the variability in the connection. Sometimes certain websites render really slowly, but that doesn't always happen, so I thought that was the connection or that particular site at that time.
I do agree that one of the transformative aspects of the touch and now the pad is instant on and instant connection. I can turn on my touch, check my email (sync'd through outlook), in maybe 10 secs. That is really nice.

Won't make much difference to a lot of people. It makes them think they seem knowledgable when they dismiss the iPad as "just a big iPhone", yadda
But as N-OS notes, reviewers have been amazed at the speed, and many reviewers have been commenting that so many reviewers have been commenting about the incredible speed.
That was fairly apparent in the Keynote, but it was nice to see it confirmed by so many tech journalists.

*Supposed* to be doing? Who knows.
But if you had a 1G 'Phone and moved up to a 3GS 'Phone, you'd know what the difference is.
Given the use I forsee the 'Pad getting compared to the 'Phone, yeah, it should be fast and smooth. I want things to happen as I trigger them. I don't want a "Let me think about that, OK, I'm in" response.
For it's intended purpose, the 'Pan may even be faster than Macs. That makes for a great, seamless user experience that lasts for hours. If you're going to pay for a device with media capability, you should be able to use it as fast or faster than you can navigate a newspaper. Kindle will have to figure that out.

Take a mobile single-tasking OS, put it on a 1GHz chip, use a SSD... it should be fast. I don't think the processor has as much to do with it as people are touting.
