Short shelf life for early DVD media? - samintx - 01-31-2010
I was going thru my DVD home recorded library to find a movie. I notices many of the disks I had recorded about 4 yrs ago on the top had crystalized whatever inbetween the layers. It was starting to show on the play side.
Does this mean the media is going bad? The DVD seemed to pay OK.
Anyone notice this on home recorded media?

sounds like a bad welding and the layers are separating.
Does sunlight get near these? Or even vented hot air?

Obviously you should probably back them up to at least DVD again.
Report back in on the original DVDs in another year please!

I have had problems with CD's and DVD's that cannot be read on certain optical drives even though the media is in perfect condition. I no longer trust optical media.

I would consider backing them up to a hard drive or two as well. Cheap insurance.

Yeah, perhaps. Maybe I should scratch them up a bit to show them who's boss!
The funny thing is that it's the discs that I put a label on that have problems. Now I just scribble on them with a laundry pen, and I haven't had any problems lately.
