Short shelf life for early DVD media? - samintx - 01-31-2010 I was going thru my DVD home recorded library to find a movie. I notices many of the disks I had recorded about 4 yrs ago on the top had crystalized whatever inbetween the layers. It was starting to show on the play side. Does this mean the media is going bad? The DVD seemed to pay OK. Anyone notice this on home recorded media? Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - Jimmypoo - 01-31-2010 sounds like a bad welding and the layers are separating. Does sunlight get near these? Or even vented hot air? Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - Jimmypoo - 01-31-2010 or alcohol cleanings? Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - Wailer - 01-31-2010 Obviously you should probably back them up to at least DVD again. Report back in on the original DVDs in another year please! Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - freeradical - 01-31-2010 I have had problems with CD's and DVD's that cannot be read on certain optical drives even though the media is in perfect condition. I no longer trust optical media. Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - Jimmypoo - 01-31-2010 >>I no longer trust optical media. perhaps it is a mutual distrust! Re: Short shelf life for early DVD media? - macphanatic - 01-31-2010 I would consider backing them up to a hard drive or two as well. Cheap insurance. The funny thing is that it's the discs that I put a label on that have problems. Now I just scribble on them with a laundry pen, and I haven't had any problems lately. |
