Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - kap - 02-01-2010 We are donating the PC belonged to a friend to a public school district. We are trying to clean up the HD (nothing offensive there) and rename the main (admin directory/folder) before setting it free. We can't do a clean install since we don't have the OEM install CD. Any helpful suggestion is greatly appreciated. The pick-time promised is within the next couple of hours. Re: Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - olnacl - 02-01-2010 Just go to the Start > control panel > users. Select the user name you want to change and choose rename. Sorry if I don't have the terminology exactly right - don't happen to have a running PC at hand, but you get the drift, I'm sure. Re: Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - DewGuy - 02-01-2010 I don't know how to do this but... Could you create a new admin user, delete the old admin user and then erase the hard drive free space? The only account created) there but it still showed the former owner's name in Explore directory. When I tried to change the name, it told me that could not be done because the directory/folder contains Windows system files. I was not deleting any dir nor files. Re: Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - kap - 02-01-2010 DewGuy, Just tried your suggestion, Windows will not let me delete the 'old' admin account (this one was created during the OS installation) ![]() UPDATE: Found this via a google search http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-4492-delete-an-administrator-account-under-windows-xp However, to the right of Computer Management (Local), there is no directory Local Users and Groups> Users Re: Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - DewGuy - 02-01-2010 kap wrote: Bummer. I Googled around a bit and it looks like the default Admin account on Windows XP cannot be deleted. Re: Rename the admin folder on a XP Home Ed box - kap - 02-01-2010 DewGuy, Forget everything in my last post. Your suggestion worked!!! I had to meet the pick-up time so I got the two admin accounts mixed up. Thanks! Note to self: DO NOT name another account admin!
