How does YouTube work on the iPad, if there is no Flash support? - Jimmypoo - 02-03-2010

They don't offer everything in alt versions (though I know there are many that do).

Apple is making YouTube an integral part of its capability of organizing your favorite vids.
but if your vid is a flash vid (like the Mow The Lawn video!) - WHAT THEN, FOR STEVE'S SAKE?!?

Convert to h.264 and enter the Hive Mind.

If there is not an alt version, it will not play on an iPhone. Presumably the iPad will be the same.

youtube serves up h264 or something similar for iphones. I think I read somewhere that YT was in the process of converting all their user-submitted files to a common format (this h264, I think) to allow for non-flash viewing as an alternative for these non-flash devices and maybe other purposes.

Mow the Lawn plays on the 'Phone, but the quality is pretty bad.

Many other YT videos play well.

YouTube
The YouTube app organizes videos so they’re easy to see and navigate. To watch one, just tap it. When you’re watching in landscape, the video automatically plays in full screen. And with its high-resolution display, iPad makes the latest HD YouTube videos look positively amazing.

That doesn't address the "how," but yes, youtube.com knows when MobileSafari accesses it and delivers the other video instead of the Flash version.

Hopefully, YouTube will soon require uploading in H.264 only.

There is a YouTube app that is default on every iPod Touch. When you click on a YouTube video, it plays in the app.

Amen.

It was a dangerous job, but somebody had to do it. I took one for the team.

Next mission: try to convert that .flv to .mp4 and see if it plays any better.
