Yep. Those vaccines are a dangerous plot by the gummint to deprive you of your Vital Bodily Fluids ! And God LIKES you to get sick ! He purely does !

Having HAD the mumps (no vaccine for it when I was a lad), I have to say I'm sorry to hear all these kids got sick. I'm even sorrier that their well-meaning parents saw fit to let their kids get ill when they didn't have to !

Yes, we should all go back to the time when the average lifespan was 30 years. That would certainly solve the Social Security problem.

IIRC, mumps and chicken pox was something parents sought infectors when it was more convenient for your kids gets to get it. 50ies / 60ies
the kids were apparently vaccinated.
given there are several strains they were either vaccinated innefectively, with the wrong strain, or this is a new one.
Maybe to be alarmist and increase human longevity we should lock up kids in basements. [/sarcasm]

It was always safer for boys to get through mumps before puberty, as there are rare but occasional cases later when the testicles are involved and sterility follows.

I guess I don't see the relevance of the religious mention. These are not automatically anti-vax people.
"Lakewood, New Jersey, Rabbi Yehunda Pirutinsky was surprised when his 14-year-old son was diagnosed with mumps a week ago. Lakewood is in Ocean County.
"He was completely vaccinated," Pirutinsky said. "So it was a surprise to us he came down with mumps."
Anyone fully vaccinated from mumps receives two doses of the vaccine, according to the CDC. Of the New Jersey cases, 77 percent were vaccinated, Terjesen said."

I can recall a time when one of my nephews came down with mumps, Neither his father or I had ever had them ourselves but after a few beers and some drunken bar advice we thought - Oh Oh!
We lived in a large metro area - pre-managed care - and believe it or not simply drove ourselves to the local MDs house/office and got a shot a 9PM on a Saturday night.
We slept well that weekend and not all because of the Schlitz.

FYI- The 'Fundamentalist' was a subtle swipe at media coverage. If this had been a group of Mormons or a Southern Christian sect, the media would have been all 'Fundamentalist Christian' about it (they WANT to say "Facists", of course) . But since the population discussed was Orthodox Judaism, it wasn't part of the buzz.
I'm in a mildy sarcastic / bitchy mood today, and media biases are getting on my nerves. I couldn't even bear to listen to NPR for more than 10 seconds this morning. I must not have gotten enough sleep last night ....

Lakewood is an odd place. It is a suburban town smack dab in the middle of suburban, lily-white Ocean County, NJ, but it has a very high crime rate. African-Americans, Latinos and Orthodox Jews seem to make up the majority population groups in the town. The well-publicized scandal that brought down 44 small-time politicians in NJ over the summer involved a huge ponzi/money-laundering/sale of human body parts scheme among Orthodox communities in New Jersey and Brooklyn.

I was told I was a real surprise, as I came along after my father HAD had the mumps as an adult and my mother had one ovary removed.
Hmmm.... Schlitz. Didn't mick e say they started brewing it again with the original recipe?
