Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - Greg - 02-20-2010 My heavens...do I really need 2 terabytes? Or 1.5? Or even just 1TB? My 500GB boot drive is dying, with 120GB available. I'm writing this from a 250GB; everything is backed up, no worries. 1TB is inexpensive. New 500GB are far less. 750GB are a bit more, but not much. I just can't determine if 1TB is huge and awesome, or huge and ridiculous. 2TB is like a gigantic hole, full of vast dark cavernous empty space. (2GB used to seem this way also, I know.) Go ahead - download everything, save it all. 2TB is awesome...I just can't fathom ever using it. Which may be shortsighted! Whee! Big and cheap! :-) Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - mattkime - 02-20-2010 Sounds like you run only one operating system and don't collect or produce media. Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - jdc - 02-20-2010 1TB is the sweet spot. $80 or $90 for a nice fast 7200 rpm one. Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - davester - 02-20-2010 If you use your drive as a DVR and media collection device, 2Tb will soon look rather small. Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - clay - 02-20-2010 I'd go for a 1tb as well. They are the sweet spot right now, as jdc notes. Keep your eyes open for good deals which surface quite regularly for them, but even at normal prices, they're a pretty good buy. "I have the entire Internet on my computer!" - RAMd®d - 02-20-2010 The "sweet spot" is having the storage you want at a price you're willing to pay. My consideration these days, is having enough HD space that I can store what I want and not exceed 50% of the capacity. I really notice a slow down once the drive gets somewhere beyond 50%. That is, when I clean it up and get it back down there from 75-100%, it's suddenly noticeably faster. One day- SSDs, baby! Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - rz - 02-20-2010 I have 5TB in my MacPro and and getting close to full... Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - Paul F. - 02-20-2010 Greg.. dude... You have a Mac Pro... You NEED a 2TB drive! In fact, you need TWO. One to underuse, and one to back up to. OK... maybe 1TB is better. Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - OWC Jamie - 02-20-2010 how many rows, columns and bullet points could you possibly have ? Re: Meandering thoughts while looking at replacement hard drives - lazydays - 02-20-2010 Video really chews up a lot of space. I have 4tb of storage with 2.5tb filled so far. |
