If he was going to off himself why would he make a mystery out of it?
2-3 weeks is a normal amount of time to spend in an inpatient facility with severe depression-- not surprising that he might not want any outside contact.

Depression might have led to some encounter with unsavory people - drugs, prostitution - that might have harmed or killed him.
