Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - OWC Jamie - 03-02-2010 So, I went out last night for a bottle of wine and for an experiment/change a half pint of brandy. Came home with 1.5L of the usual wine and a pint of 151. (I blame the Costa Rica thread) So, I'm thinking Mojito and I have something in green cans on the porch. Either 7UP or ginger ale. Leftover from Thanxgiving (we don't drink much soda). I could buy some club soda -but those green cans are just sitting there, full. Pretty sure I have some limes, but - no spearmint. There was some in the garden last Fall but it should be gone or something by now. This big red nanny state FLAMMABLE CAUTION label is a hoot. What lawyer can we thank for that ? Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - H1N1 - 03-02-2010 yuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - DP - 03-02-2010 You invent a new drink-a "billbito"... Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - mattkime - 03-02-2010 be adventurous and give it a try! Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - dmann - 03-02-2010 Mojitos are made with simple syrup, so if you use 7-Up, I'd skip that part. I have a HUGE sweet tooth, but just don't like sweet drinks, so I'd use ginger ale before 7 up, but neither is a really good substitute (IMHO.) DM Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - Joey Cupcakes - 03-03-2010 That's like substituting Miracle Whip for mayonnaise. Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - smacks - 03-03-2010 Folks.... He's using 151. Doesn't matter much WHAT you mix with it. Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - mrbigstuff - 03-03-2010 well... what happened? Re: Mixologists: substitute 7UP for club soda ? - guitarist - 03-03-2010 The primary difference is sugar. Club soda is basically neutral. Carbonation only, really. Either of the two soft drinks you mentioned are loaded with sweetener, corn syrup. The lemon or ginger flavor is secondary. The primary contribution is the sweetness. It's like mixing whatever drink you were going to mix, then adding 6-8 teaspoons of sugar to it. So if it's an option, you could try adding as much sour flavor (any limes you might have) as you can to rebalance it. How'd it work out? Curious to hear. |
