Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - datbeme - 03-03-2010 Sometime in the last 24 hours, our kitchen iMac (17" G5 iSight) went to sleep, and it won't wake up. It powers up, but the screen stays dark. The white light glows, and it hums as if it's about to start up...but...no chime, no gray screen, no question mark. Just a black screen as if it's off. After about a minute, the fan kicks on loud. I've tried many different things recommended here and elsewhere on the web, but this is what happens each and every time. Anyone want to take a stab at what the issue might be? I replaced a bad power supply about a year ago, and it was worth it to squeeze a little more life out of this machine, but I think that's as far as I'm willing to go. That's a shame because this still a pretty capable machine...I was thinking of giving it to my folks sometime soon. Re: Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - jdc - 03-03-2010 battery? Re: Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - datbeme - 03-03-2010 Would that impact the start up process in this way? I wonder how hard it would be to get to the battery in this model. I opened it partially and verified that getting behind the screen looks pretty tricky. It was just about week ago that I replaced the dead hard drive in my 24" iMac. The process has been described many times, but it really was a piece of cake. Thanks to you jdc for some very helpful tips (haven't had a chance to post about this yet, but I have a few comments of my own for those that want to give it a whack). Re: Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - datbeme - 03-03-2010 Coincidentally, since I already had the 24" in the kitchen to open it up, I took the opportunity to place it in the spot where the G5 sits to see how bad the glare would be. We have 4 large skylights in the kitchen, and I wanted to find out if the glossy screen would be acceptable if we ever had to replace the G5. My initial reaction was that it was awful, but within about 5 minutes I didn't even notice the reflectiveness. I could definitely live with it...and I was lovin' the bigger screen. 24" is way too big for the kitchen, but as the following picture shows, it sure fits the space well. ![]() Re: Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - Doc - 03-03-2010 No chime is a bad sign. Call a few local Mac repair places and see how much they'll charge you for a diagnosis. http://consultants.apple.com/findacn/ Re: Last rights for 17" iMac G5 (iSight)? - h linamen - 03-03-2010 Had the same problem, as you describe, but on a much older mac (don't remember the model) and support told me it was the pram battery. Sure enough, a new battery resurrected it. It had no chime, no screen...appeared dead.
