Gaming on the Mac: Shock to the System Edition - Valve games (Half-Life 2?) coming to the Mac? - Blankity Blank - 03-04-2010 Valve is apparently bringing it's Steam distribution system to the Mac and things are looking are looking very good, and there at least one report that we will see at least some of Valve's games on the Mac; at a guess, those based on it's Source engine. ![]() Now there are perhaps a few things to bear in mind. So far, these are only 'teasers'. April 1st is coming up fast, and Valve's feelings about Mac users has traditionally been… well, the word "hostile" comes to mind, ever since they felt they were being pestered to death over the release of the original "Half-Life" way back when and the subsequent blow back after the project was canceled (At least that's my understanding of their history). The Game Developers Conference is being held next week, so perhaps there will be word for sure then. If this is the real thing, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself. Re: Gaming on the Mac: Shock to the System Edition - Valve games (Half-Life 2?) coming to the Mac? - decay - 03-04-2010 someone created a port of half-life 2 for mac... http://rapidmegashare.blogspot.com/2008/10/macgamez-half-life-2-intelciderport.html not saying download it - just sayin' it's been done & works. http://forums.macnn.com/77/gaming/376373/half-life-2-cider/ http://constc.blogspot.com/2008/03/running-half-life-2-natively-on-mac-os.html I'll briefly mention that there is another player in this space, Transgaming, but unlike Codeweavers, they forked off Wine and aren't donating code back upstream to Wine, so if you need to choose, it seems as if supporting Codeweavers seems like a better option from the moral point of view, as Codeweavers do donate back to Wine. Also, Transgaming's Cedega product doesn't allow users running unaltered Windows games on Mac, only on Linux. They don't offer Cedega for Mac; they have Cider, but that's not a runtime but rather a library that developers need to link against to produce Mac-runnable versions of their games written against the Win32 API. So in reality, CrossOver is the only solution for running a Windows game natively under Mac OS X. Fortunately, it seems to be a good one. |
