Hotspot Shield (for Mac) - anonymous surfing? - Mini 9 - 03-30-2010

Just heard and downloaded hotspot shield for Mac.
Anyone use this yet?
Just trying it out.

http://hotspotshield.com/

Seems to be like an ultra-easy, proxy server service.

Is this like saying something to the affect of...."someone MIGHT be able to snoop on what I do on the internet, so I will use this program to route all of my traffic through this company that WILL have access to everything I do"

I did a lot of research on this last year and went with Witopia.net. I gave hotspot shield a chance but it was doing some weird stuff on my machine...don't ask because I don't remember.

I can't recommend Witopia.net enough...very good tech support, great price and speed is fast enough.

what are you hiding and from whom?

that's a far more interesting discussion...

Hotspot Shield is ad supported. Please report back once you've used it some to let us know how it works.

I have a brother who lives in China and it might be helpful to have access to a couple of proxy services when I visit him. (It hasn't been much of an issue on two past visits, but what China blocks can seem strange to us in the US.)

Thanks.

So you download it, mount it, install it, launch it . . . then what's supposed to happen?

No, that's ridiculous. Security is no laughing matter…wait, no you are 100% correct. Wink

That's the problem with many of these services. If you are serious about security, you need to set up some sort of secure connection from an open network back to a trusted network and route all internet traffic through the latter. Such as your own home internet connection. Or if you are connecting for business, then your company should have something configured. Trusting a third party service without verification of said third party and service? No thank you.
