Unix is so cool... - Doc - 04-11-2010 I have 2 apps chugging away transcoding, I'm applying filters to 5-megapixel images in Photoshop and another app is doing a large file transfer. Both CPUs are pegged at 100%. That's when I launch Toast and start it going to make a DVD image. ...And then I post about it here. Yeah. I've gotten a few beachballs for a second or two here and there. Imagine trying to do all this at once in OS 9. (Or in Windows 95.) We are sooo spoiled. :-) Re: Unix is so cool... - Speedy - 04-11-2010 Can do the same in Windows 7 but faster. Re: Unix is so cool... - silvarios - 04-11-2010 Really? Why faster? Is the kernel of Windows 7 that much better than Vista? I was under the impression it was not. Want faster? Ditch the bloatware of OS X or Windows and find yourself a nice hand tuned compiled from source operating system and accompanying third party software. Or just appreciate the original sentiment for what it was. The OP was simply referencing a time when multitasking on an operating system was challenging. Unix did not have this problem at the time. Linux did not have this problem. BSD did not have this problem. Shoot, NeXTStep did not have this problem. Only the glorious twin crapfests that were System 7-Mac OS 9 and Windows 95-ME had such a limitation (assuming we are considering a time frame of the mid 1990s to 2000). I greatly enjoyed my time with my old Macs, but even this old school Mac user can attest to the fact the the classic Mac OS was mightily limited. Re: Unix is so cool... - guitarist - 04-11-2010 Are you doing it in Unix, for real? Or just using OS X the normal way. Re: Unix is so cool... - guitarist - 04-12-2010 I think he means "OS X is so cool" Re: Unix is so cool... - Doc - 04-12-2010 guitarist wrote: No. I meant "Unix." OS X wouldn't be so cool without BSD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution#Significant_BSD_descendants Re: Unix is so cool... - Kramerica - 04-12-2010 How do you run Toast in Windows 7? |
