Sucking data from a Powermac 7300 hard drive - Lance Birk - 04-12-2010

I stripped the HDD from an old 7300 and wonder what type of connector (to USB) I could use. I have 2 other 7300s with intact drives and need to suck the data from them, too.

Anyone?

SCSI to USB?

dunno if I have ever seen one...

they wont boot at all?

If you can get them to boot, you could transfer the data via ethernet to another Mac.

Well you've got SCSI hard drives there. Looks like OWC has a SCSI to Firewire adapter- http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Ratoc/FR1SX/
Not sure about USB.

if they boot then your best bet is probably copying the data over ethernet.

If the machines still run, you could add a USB card like this.

"For MAC Users
• Power Mac G3 Blue-and-White or greater (G3 Beige and all Mac Clone not supported)"

Don't think that'll work in a 7300.

I have an old portable external CD burner which came with a SCSI to FireWire adapter. It worked fine with that. If the machines won't boot that's your best bet. Check with OWC about the right connector. Wouldn't you also need a SCSI case?

FireWire would be a lot faster than ethernet too.

The other option would be to find an old Mac like a beige G3 which has both SCSI and ATA/IDE. Even without an upgrade card for FireWire or USB you could transfer the files onto an internal ATA drive (now called PATA), then put the drive in USB case.

Good luck.

Not sure about USB.

Ratoc also makes/made SCSI to USB2 adapters. Adaptec also made them, discontinued now, but some places still have stock. However, you would need to have the drive in a case, these adapters do not have power to run the drive. Prices run in the $60-$100+ range, though one used Adaptec adapter does show up on Amazon for $17.

Best bet is as suggested, booting the 7300 and transferring over a network. If the PS is good, about the only thing you might need is a new PRAM/clock battery. If the 7300 is definitely dead, find someone with an older Mac with SCSI available.

This may be one of the situations in which you check with a local repair shop and ask if they can (1see if the drives are working and (2) back off the data to cds. In the end, it may end up costing about the same or less then investing in an scsi adapter of some kind.

ditto pqrst... probably time to borrow the needed equipment, or pay someone that has the equipment to do it for you... since you apparently have a couple of working 7300's, easiest path would be to borrow an external SCSI CD burner to copy the existing 7300's drives, then swap your pulled drive back into one and copy it. no need to mess w/ USB, FW, or other pricey adapters just to get the data into a usable format. if the 7300's are all dead, beyond a PRAM battery, then just mate the drives to an external SCSI case, and any PCI Mac w/ a SCSI card/interface (w/ appropriate cable to go from case to PCI card), and copy to anything you want to via the host PCI Mac. I'm gonna assume I'm not alone here, and that many MRF'ers have this stuff in their collection. post your location, maybe you'll get a volunteer.

I have an external SCSI 8X Lacie CD-R burner sitting in the back on a shelf, with all cables. Want it?

I'm pretty sure it still works. I don't have anything left to hook it up to that I could verify, however...
