OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - volcs0 - 04-12-2010 I had no intention of purchasing an iPad. From reading a ton of reviews, I understood that while cool, it would add nothing to the myriad of laptops and desktops around our home. My brother (generous that he is), bought himself one and got me one too as a gift. After using it for the past few days, I must say, I had no idea how amazing it could be. A few observations: 1. The multitouch is "how it is meant to be." Almost like using it for the first time. Using something like google maps is just an amazing experience now. 2. It is really, really fast. I can't believe how fast apps open and close and web pages load. 3. The apps are terrific. I was worried about having to use the iTunes store for all my content, but several apps have emerged that obviate this. For instance, AirVideo runs as a server on my Power Mac. I use the client software to connect to the server (local network only right now) and then I can basically stream any content I have on my computer. It is very slick and fast. I never got Remote Desktop to work well from my iPhone. But WinAdmin makes my iPad basically into a Windows 7 machine, and I can access all my work-related apps easily. It works really well. The Netflix app is great. ABC has one for native content. And when Hulu comes out with theirs, it will kick things up another notch. I guess I had expected this to be a fast, big, souped up iPod Touch. But goes so far beyond that. Anyway, I'm very happy so far, as you can tell. Re: OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - kap - 04-12-2010 Your review has increased my temptation for an iPad two notches :oldfogey: How is it with email, web-surfing and chat? Re: OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - cbelt3 - 04-12-2010 another recommendation::: My daughter had a screaming fight with her fiancee because "he's paid more attention to his new iPad than to her for the last week." I had to laugh. Remembering my lovely wife being really pissed at me for spending roughly a whole weekend playing Ultima on the Apple ][+, and ignoring her. So even us old farts had similar issues :oldfogey: Re: OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - volcs0 - 04-12-2010 kap wrote: The surfing is a dream... zoom in, zoom out, touch, etc. Very easy. I haven't done much extensive typing, and I can see how that might be a chore. I didn't want to shell out for the Pages app - am waiting to see how the Office2Pro app will mature, since it uses cloud storage. Re: OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - RAMd®d - 04-12-2010 But goes so far beyond that. This is all I'm saying. A lot of people and professional critics have dismissed the 'Pad as a big 'Phone in an attempt to minimize it's utility. Several critics have said otherwise, and that's been my view as well. Even here there were conclusions made that were just plain wrong. Ever since the first iPod, I've learned not to jump to conclusions without actually holding and using the device. I really, really, like this thing and with a little help from the iPhone 4.0 update and some third-party devs, this will replace my 'Books and allow me to single-purpose my main Macs. This is not to say I won't need the other gear; I just won't need it as often. This will not be the case for a lot of people, but they are not the target market. This is only just the beginning... Now, I'm just trying to find a folio-type case that I like. (The Apple case is on order, but I've heard that it feels a little cheap.) Re: OK... this thing is much cooler than I expected - Black - 04-12-2010 Reminds me of Seth Meyer's coverage on SNL- " Apple reported that it sold 300,000 iPads on the first day, thus continuing a trend of consumers buying a product to find out what it does."
