hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - mattkime - 04-13-2010 previous thread - http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,918707,918759 i have 10.6.3 up and running perfectly fine on my hp 311. there are a few rough spots but they're small and don't affect me. (ethernet doesn't wake from sleep...thats the only one i've seen) so far, its my impression that this machine is a considerable step up from the dell mini 10v. the screen is downright spacious in comparison. this comes at the expense of smaller pixels but i'm happy to make that trade. i believe i notice a speed improvement but the only difference could be the graphics processor....or the additional GB of ram (i'm running 3 total). the main site of discussion for hp 311 machines are the forums over at insanelymac. the people there are extremely knowledgeable but like most people, they'll visit the forum every couple of days. this can leave you advice free for a couple of days. i'm trying to lend my help to better define the install process and, in general, increase support for this hardware. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=195374&st=1460&start=1460 in all, its taken a bit more elbow grease but i'm very happy with the result. Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - pinkoos - 04-13-2010 I had one and swapped out the hard drive for an SSD and then created a dual partition with SL on one and Windows 7 on the other. I agree it was great, but I flipped it a few months ago in anticipation of an iPad purchase (which I did). Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - mrbigstuff - 04-13-2010 I can't get used to the tiny trackpad, but the screen is worth it. did you deal with the issue of the wireless card? Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - NewtonMP2100 - 04-13-2010 ....waiting to hack the Samsung....but I hear that *** is disabled..... Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - mattkime - 04-13-2010 >>I can't get used to the tiny trackpad, but the screen is worth it. I snapped up the logitech mouse deal a month or so ago. Much better than the track pad on any netbook. >>did you deal with the issue of the wireless card? still trying to figure out my options. i don't use wifi very much. (mainly stays parked at work next to my real work pc) using a dell 1510 looks to be the leading contender. Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - Psurfer - 04-13-2010 pinkoos, I'd be interested in hearing your 411 on iPad v HP 311 Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - GuyGene - 04-13-2010 Hackintosh users, I just wonder if you could let us know how much $ you have in getting the Dells, etc., to run OS X - total amount, including extra RAM, everything. I really want to know, because I am seriously thinking about going this route instead of a refurb MacBook Air, which is currently $1,100 at Apple store (well, $1,099...). I know everything works straight away with the MBA, and I like the size and weight compared to a Dell mini, etc., but WOW, the price of MBA! Therefore, my question... I am passing on the iPad as a laptop replacement. Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - mattkime - 04-13-2010 depends upon which model you're looking at. this hp 311 will probably come out close to $450 but the dell mini 10v probably comes out closer to $300-350 Re: hp 311 netbook hackintosh follow up - pinkoos - 04-13-2010 Psurfer wrote: The HP was actually quite usable. I had a Dell Mini 9 before that and, in retrospect, the Dell's keyboard and limited resolution should have been dealbreakers. The HP, OTOH, had a larger, higher resolution screen and a much better keyboard. Everything was working on mine except for internal wifi. I didn't want to go through the trouble of switching out the wifi card, so I just bought the smallest wireless N USB dongle I could find, which happened to be like $12 from Meritline. I opted not to keep it b/c I guess I just don't have the time anymore for tinkering with this kind of stuff and really wanted the iPad for a convenient web surfer and app machine. Sold the HP a few months ago, bought the iPad on release day and haven't looked back! I need to go to HP/Dell sites and do a price check again; be a few months since I last checked the 10" netbook prices... I already have X 10.6.xx, so good to go with system. I am also considering getting a netbook with Linux... I just need something smaller than the MacBooks and not as costly as the MacBook Air. As I said, iPad just won't do for my needs... |
