TW HD-DVR Question... - Harbourmaster - 04-13-2010

Finally moved into HD TV land this past weekend with the purchase of a used Sony KD-34XBR910, a magnificent and well kept piece of glass!

We have had digital cable service from TW for the last 5 years.
Time Warner wants an extra $10.00 a month for the HD tuner/DVR .

My 2 questions to you folks that have this service already are:
Do you think it's worth it and
Is there a particular model of DVR that I should avoid and/or ask for?

TIA

I resisted a DVR for a year because my cable system required buying a tier of channels that I didn't want in order to get the DVR. They tossed in a free cable box with that tier, so I finally got the box and the DVR 3 weeks ago and I'm just stunned.

Being able to pause a show in the middle and then catch up, recording two things at the same time, time shifting, having the machine record new broadcasts of a particular show wherever they can be found--it's so much better than a VCR.

My cable company uses Scientific Atlanta boxes. They work fine for me. The only strange thing I found was that two channels didn't come in on the DVR that did come in on the cable box. When I swapped the two, they continued to come in on the cable box but not the DVR, suggesting that the signal to the wall was ok and there was a programming problem with the DVR. The guy came out and said we needed a better cable from the wall to the DVR. As I thought, "sure..." he made one up and it took care of it. Who knows why-my original piece of cable worked on the box but not the DVR.

In any case, I'm very happy with it and will continue to pay the freight.

I've got 2 of them right now, both are SA8300HD boxes. I hate to say it but I don't think I would
want to be without one. I picked up the second box before the Olympics but then HBO started the
Pacific series and Discovery or whoever start the Life series so instead of taking back after the Olympics
were over we still have the second unit, $21/month is too much for a second box.

There is a Samsung brand HD-DVR that they give out too, I know nothing about it. None of them
are perfect we went through 4 boxes before getting one that didn't act crazy.
