free mts converter (to use on pre imovie 08 or PC) - MacDoxy - 04-14-2010
i know imovie 08 and above open this file but my friend in canada is trying to help someone with an "older mac" open/edit/burn an MTS movie
any FREE
PC software (my friend has the file and has a PC at work- the file is for work project)
or free MAC software (the person who needs the movie for their organization has a mac but the mac is harder to get a hold of)
that converts MTS to say .mov or whatever windows media uses??

I dug around to find a MTS video source file and found that Handbrake was able to convert it to MP4. No real guarantee though since it might depend on what camera created it.

It looks like VLC will open mts files. Kind of makes sense considering the nature of the VideoLAN project. Its rather clunky to use but if it does open an mts file it will transcode it.

Toast 10 and Final Cut Pro are listed too.
I checked to see if MPEG Streamclip would, but mts is not listed as a supported input format.
