Yet another cat going to hang with other forum animals... (BW and long) - DP - 04-15-2010

I had briefly mentioned in other recent posts about one of our cats being ill and although we did what we could we had to let him go yesterday. O.C. came to us from the street in '04. He was ragged, skinny, and hungry and it wasn't long before we knew he was unique. A real knucklehead-he entertained himself and us in the process and he endeared himself to us right away.
When cats have shown up at our house we would identify them by their coloration so he was "O.C.", the orange cat. The name just stuck.

When I shot this picture it was before we had taken him to the vet for a complete check up and found out he had feline leukemia. He seemed healthy at the time and we decided to give him a good life for the short time he had. He then acquired a herpes infection in his eyes which we were able to treat when it flared up but he still seemed healthy as time went on.

This picture showed that he could be comfortable anywhere-in this case a sample box of ceramic tile.

He loved going to our cottage where he could catch mice and other small critters and even went after a turkey! He pushed the screen out of the loft window so he could perch up there.

We even took him out on the party boat which he seemed to like.

This pic shows how his eyes were affected by the herpes as they didn't open as wide as seen in the shot of him in the tree but again we were able to treat it.
Last Fall he started acting ill and we took him in and he had a bacterial infection which we began to treat and it seemed successful. But in January he had a relapse and he started showing less and less interest in eating and was becoming listless. Back again to the vet and he had also lost a lot of weight and his red blood cell count was falling. We treated him and he was responding but then a month ago he started sliding again. He wouldn't eat so we started feeding him and medicating by syringe. Yesterday we took him in for a checkup and we found fluid in his lungs and heart and his red blood cell count was down so low that our vet-a great one by the way-was surprised O.C. was still alive.
We decided then it was time to let him go. He was so weak that when the doctor began the injection O.C. passed almost immediately.
He got six good years we don't think he would have had on the street and everyone in the 'hood knew him.

We have no kids so our cats are our kids. We had to see this thru but we also knew we wouldn't push it if it got to be too much for him.
I know you members that have lost animals know the feeling... So he's partying now with BunBun and the others.
Sorry for how long this is.

Sorry to hear about your loss. O.C. seemed like a good guy and what a handsome cat he was!

R.I.P. Orange Cat.

So sorry to hear of your loss. What lovely photos you have to commemorate Orange Cat! Thanks for sharing them.

I have an Orange Cat at the moment as well. He must belong to a neighbor because he's very fat and well cared for. He makes frequent visits to my yard and back window. Its drives my cat crazy which I think is most of his entertainment value. They're best enemies.
