MacBook repairs followup - M A V I C - 04-16-2010

I let DW run for a few days and it found 6k+ bad blocks. The owner decided not to let it finish (otherwise they'd be without it for a week+) but to see if Apple would replace it. Apple said no. So I sent them a link to a drive OWC had on sale. I told them to get some RAM while they're shopping too. They did, and they also got a second HD for backup.

I'll probably try to get their old HD and see what I can recover from it.

Little bit late for the backup part. I don't understand why people don't backup more often, especially since every Mac made in the last 3 or 4 years has Time Machine built in.

Some people aren't tech savvy enough to know that. These guys know if you flash the ECU on a car they can end up getting better gas mileage and thus pay for the flash and more. It's not like they're not smart, they just aren't very knowledgeable in this area.

Who did they buy it from that didn't bother to tell them about Time Machine?

I have the answer for this.... time machine is 'scary'. I've heard that more than once.

Assuming that people don't read any instructions (pretty safe assumption) they see the TM menu items. They 'Enter Time Machine' and the screen moves around in a scary, bewildering manner - and that's the end of that....

FWIW, I think "Time Machine" is a bad name. People are likely to gloss over it because they can't tell what it is by the name.

I have no idea who they bought it from.
