Weird iPhone / iPad keyboard glitch: no grave accent (`) character - Tofer - 04-16-2010

Here's a weird one. I let a friend borrow my iPad, and he said "I can't type in my password into GMail." I asked what character, and he said, "the backtick" (also called the 'grave accent'). The character looks like this:

`

After a bit of googling, it seems that the iPhone/iPad keyboard doesn't have the ability to input that character, which is odd, because it is ASCII and (actually on every real English keyboard). You can, however, copy/paste it from a web page, if necessary.

Put your finger on the apostrophe and hold it for a second or two.

Is there a pop-up and does it have the accent mark?

I couldn't use my regular screen name here because the Phone doesn't have the ® and I couldn't CnP it. Now that the 'Phone has CnP, it's not a problem.

Same with the 'Pad.

Based on regular keyboards, the backtick should appear if you hold down the tilde ~.

Actually, the backtick should be on a key of its own, while the tilde would appear when you held down the backtick.

I feel this is a grave error on Apple's part.
