Mom's Powerbook G4 sound input/output gone all the sudden - Jerry® - 05-27-2010
I'm running my mom's Powerbook G4 in Safe Boot Mode because of problems it's been having (trying to get her to get a new macbook). Anyway, the sound suddenly is no longer there. I went into Sys Prefs and clicked on SOund and it says "No output device found." Same for input. I repaired permissions and still nothing. She's running 10.4.11.
Any clue?

Try a new user account or boot from another OS X installation. Do you have sound now?

Wait. Safe mode? Is sound even enabled in safe mode? You need to boot into the normal OS if you want sound.

First, ensure that the headphone jack is unobstructed, i.e. nothing is stuck inside the jack.
Next, launch Audio MIDI Setup in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Set audio input and output to 44100.0 kHz and 2-ch 16-bit using Core Audio or Built-in Audio.
If you still have no sound output, you can eliminate hardware as the source of the problem by logging into another account and trying sound there.

Zap the PRAM. Restart, hold the command - option - p - r down right after it begins to start. Hold the keys down until it chimes three times, then let up on the keys and it will start and you should have sound again.

Some features don't work in Safe Mode
Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X features do not work in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem. The behavior of some devices such as an AirPort card may vary depending on computer and Mac OS X version.
Safe Mode in Mac OS X 10.5 or later also disables Quartz Extreme (hardware accelerated graphics). Applications that depend on Quartz Extreme will not open, and the Mac OS X menu bar will appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" is enabled in Desktop & Screen Saver preferences.
Safe Mode in Mac OS X 10.6 or later also disables File Sharing access. This means you will not be able to mount Time Capsule disks or volumes being served by other computers running Mac OS X.
