New lawn-- how long to wait before first cut - Black - 05-30-2010
I rebooted my lawn about 4-5 weeks ago, and the first grass is very long, but no seed stalks yet. What's the convention on how long to wait before first cut? There are a lot of small bare patches unfortunately; I think heavy rain/overwatering might have caused some erosion of the seeded soil in spots. Overseeded once . . .

When it is 4 inches, cut. Grass, when it can't grow higher, grows wider - like many weeds. Keep watering.

"The rule of thumb suggested by the Cornell Extension is, "Mow when your grass is dry and 3 to 3-1/2 inches tall. Never cut it shorter then 2 to 2-1/2 inches or remove more than one third of the blade.

Top seeding and hand broadcasting steer manure can also help fill in the bare spots.

Yeah, the lawn here is beginning to make me it's b*tch.
I did get some fertilizer this afternoon, since it looks like we have rain coming, and I wanted to get it down (which I did) before we do.

Thanks to all. Was really looking for info specific to virgin lawns but some interesting stuff there. The "if it can't grow up it will grow out" stuff doesn't quite have the ring of truth IMO but I went ahead and mowed anyways-- looks much better than I'd feared. I'm pretty sure i can get the bare patches fixed.
