Hmmm, they make it sound like it's all rosy and maybe it is. Can't help but wonder if they didn't use him for whatever they could (Apple insider info) and now they'd like to thank him by asking him to take a back seat. There is no question Google wouldn't be nearly as far along as they are if it weren't for the mole.
