I could use a few of these as server machines. The video card gives me a bit of pause, but that's stlll an excellent price for that system. Now I just have to take my clients into springing for them before they're gone.

one of the clients i service has two of these, and for some reason, they feel laggy and the hard drive noise is very noticeable.

i've tried diskwarrior, applejack, and so on. i've used dual core macbooks at slower clock speeds that feel faster.

Doing the same work? My iBook G4 is really fast in TextEdit, not so much in iPhoto.

When they get delivered, immediately let apple know if it has the matching serial number portion and they will replace it. It took a few days but I got mine replaced no problem. Just make sure you have that Apple documented issue link, they didn't believe me at first.

This might make sense to replace my G5 tower.

It looks like it might be hard to get that video card replaced before Jan 31. You'd need to pull that sucker out the moment it came in.

My trusty old G5 2.0 Dually is starting to show its age. I tried the hackintosh thing and it works about 95% seamless, but just feel like it fulfills my inner Mac urges. I was looking at the last Mac Pro deal like this and was pretty tempted.

Pulled the trigger on this. I can start clean with snow leopard. Move everything over. It will be the same, only different, yet stronger and faster!

How much "better" would it be to add another 4gb ram? Worth the $ or is 4gb enough for a typical user?

I saw one of the comments about about upgrading the processors in this Mac Pro. Anyone have any more specifics on what processors would work, what to pay and if this is truly a plug and play thing or is there more behind the scenes things that need to be tweaked.

How big of a difference in performance over a dual 2.5 G5?

Runs photoshop CS4, 5 very nicely and handles large files such as 144mb opened jpegs speedily. In my recollection, it seems overall faster than my quad g5 2.5

If worst comes to worst you can get a used NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT for $75-125 on ebay.
