and which cable is fastest? I thought a ethernet cable between a G5 and a brand new iMac would be speedy but, well, its not.
also - anyone know how to view the video output from a G4 mini on an iMac?

if you use an ethernet cable, open network preferences, to to TCP/IP and make sure it says 1000 mbps.
some older cables, maybe some bundled with older router and cable modems are only rated for 100 mbps. Just find a Cat5e or better cable before you start the transfer.
I moved about 200+ GB of data in 5 hours IIRC.
What OS on the G4? enable screen sharing on the G4, then log on from iMac.

Firewire would have probably been a better choice. With the G5 in Target Disk Mode, the iMac would be reading directly from it's hard drive. Over Ethernet, everything is going through File Sharing which adds additional overhead.

I usually use FW800 and speed varies greatly depending upon how much data is moving and the speeds of the drives themselves (e.g., moving from a 5400 rpm to a 7200 rpm).

1) MA is more than just moving files -- its copying thousand and thousands of invisible files, plus checking permissions and verifying files.
2) 2011 iMac? You cant. Input can only be done from TB port to TB port on the new iMac. So the only thing that can jack in is a 2011 MBP (or another iMac)

Not true.
I have a 2011 MBP (5weeks old) and used FW 800 and Migration Assistant to bring my account from the early 2009 mini.m Worked fine and fast.
I have not even tried the TB port yet - no need to. Waiting for accessories to become available.
